Bengaluru techie Atul Subhash’s estranged wife, Nikita Singhania, denied allegations of harassment during police questioning. Subhash, 34, died by suicide on December 9, leaving behind a video and a 24-page note accusing Nikita and her family of harassment and extortion.

Nikita, however, told that she was living away from Atul for almost three years. “If I harassed him for money, why would I stay away from him?” she is quoted to have told Times of India. She also claimed that she had faced harassment during her marriage and had lodged a complaint with the police in 2022 alleging dowry-related abuse and assault.

Case Developments

Nikita (29), her mother Nisha (54), and brother Anurag (27) were arrested by Bengaluru police on charges of abetment to suicide. Nikita was detained near Hongkong Bazar Road in Gurugram, while her mother and brother were arrested in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. All three were transported to Bengaluru, underwent medical examinations, and were remanded to 14-day judicial custody at Central Prison, Parappana Agrahara.

After their arrest, Atul’s father and brother expressed concern over the well being of Subhash’s 4-year-old son whose whereabouts still remain unknown.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Whitefield) Shivakumar Gunare said that proper investigation is being done, and a chargesheet will be filed in case the evidence supports the allegations. Police have recovered Subhash’s handwritten and digital suicide notes along with his electronic devices for forensic analysis and ruled out the allegations of evidence missing, saying all the materials are intact and submitted to the court.
Allegations and Counterclaims

Nikita’s 2022 police complaint had accused Subhash of dowry harassment and physical abuse, stating that his behavior was “beast-like.” She also said that her in-laws’ excessive demands, including dissatisfaction with wedding gifts and an additional Rs 10 lakh, had severely affected her father’s health, leading to his death.

In his suicide note, Subhash refuted her claims, stating that Nikita’s father did not die from shock caused by dowry demands but from a heart-related illness.
