A ground-level survey of the Akbarpur parliamentary constituency was conducted by India News to analyse the performance of Devendra Singh, the Member of Parliament from Akbarpur, and to gather voters’ feedback about him.

Devendra Singh, also known as Bhole Singh, is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and emerged victorious in the 2014 and 2019 general elections from the Akbarpur parliamentary constituency in Kanpur. Traditionally a stronghold of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), the dynamics of the Akbarpur Lok Sabha seat have witnessed a shift with Devendra Singh’s consecutive wins.

Becoming the Chairman of Cooperative Societies in 1982 marked the beginning of Devendra Singh’s political journey. Steadily climbing the political ladder, he won the 1991 state assembly election from the Derapur Vidhan Sabha constituency. In 2014, the BJP fielded him for the Akbarpur Lok Sabha seat, securing his first win in parliamentary elections. Reaffirming the party’s confidence, he triumphed again in 2019.

Historically recognized as a Congress stronghold, the Akbarpur Lok Sabha seat has evolved to include other parties over the years. With approximately 18 lakh voters, the constituency is grappling with developmental challenges and backwardness. Despite the significance of development as an issue, high-profile MPs have struggled to make a substantial impact.
Caste dynamics play a crucial role in elections, with a significant number of Scheduled Caste (Dalit) and Scheduled Tribe (Savarn) voters. The BSP traditionally held a strong influence among Dalit voters, but the BJP has made notable inroads into the Dalit vote bank in recent years.

The constituency faces pressing issues, including unemployment and a water crisis, yet a clear roadmap for development remains elusive. Rural areas continue to experience deterioration despite claims of development by winning MPs.
As the 2024 general elections approach, public scrutiny of Devendra Singh’s performance is anticipated. Accurate surveys conducted by India News aim to assess the MPs’ performance and present the opinions of the public before the nation. The electoral landscape of Akbarpur holds special significance as voters weigh their choices and expectations for the future.
