A 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar on Sunday morning. The tremor hit near Meiktila, a small city located between Mandalay and Naypyitaw. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) shared this update shortly after the quake.
Powerful Aftershock Follows Deadly Quake
This tremor was one of the strongest aftershocks since the deadly 7.7-magnitude earthquake on March 28. That earlier quake caused widespread destruction and stretched the country’s emergency services to the limit.
Crisis Deepens in War-Torn Myanmar
At the same time, Myanmar continues to suffer from civil war and a deepening humanitarian crisis. Because of this, it becomes even harder for people to recover from natural disasters. Every new quake makes things worse.
No Major Damage, But Fear Spreads
So far, officials have not reported any serious injuries or major building damage. However, residents near the epicenter felt the quake strongly. People in Wundwin township, close to Meiktila, said the ground shook violently. They saw ceiling cracks and rushed outside in fear.
Communities Already on Edge
Although there were no major casualties, the quake caused panic. People, already anxious from past tremors, now face more fear and uncertainty. With civil unrest and repeated natural disasters, Myanmar remains under extreme pressure. Each new tremor adds to the suffering and makes recovery more difficult.
