Syria’s interim government has announced the resumption of international air travel starting January 7. Ashhad al-Salibi, head of the General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport, confirmed that the country will begin receiving international flights at Damascus International Airport.
Al-Salibi detailed ongoing collaborations with Syria’s partners to prepare Aleppo and Damascus airports to welcome flights from around the globe. This initiative aims to re-establish connectivity and facilitate travel, signaling a revival in Syria’s aviation sector.
Qatar Airlines Reinstates Flights
Qatar Airlines recently announced that it will resume flights between Doha’s Hamad International Airport and Damascus International Airport starting January 7. This marks the first time in nearly 13 years that flights will operate between these locations due to the prolonged war in Syria. The airline will offer three weekly flights starting from Tuesday.
Syria’s airports have been inactive since the rebel coalition toppled the Al Assad regime on December 8. The resumption of international flights reflects the country’s readiness to rebuild its aviation industry.
Challenges and Optimism
The civil war in Syria, lasting over a decade, severely impacted vital sectors due to internal conflicts, regional influences, and international involvement. With the collapse of Assad’s regime, Syria is now on a path to recovery. The world watches as the interim government strives to meet the demands of the Syrian people.
Despite cautious optimism, critics remain skeptical, especially in light of recent controversial amendments by the Ministry of Education. These amendments have faced strong criticism for their conservative nature.
A New Era for Syrian Aviation
The resumption of international flights is a significant step towards restoring Syria’s connectivity and rebuilding its economy. The success of this initiative will depend on continued efforts to address the needs and concerns of the Syrian population.
