Encouraging an underprivileged artist

With a noble cause to exhibit the artworks of an underprivileged artist, Navya Naveli Gallery is showcasing ‘Beyond Hope And Horizon’ artworks by artist Sukhlal from 8th to 21st April at Greater Kailash Enclave 1. This show is curated by Maïté Delteil and Sakti Burman. Eminent artist Anjolie Ela Menon, Arpana Caur and many other renonwed artist were present in the inauguration ceremony of the show.
“Sukhlal (Artist) has been our cook for more than one year now. Living with us made him discover a new profession. Silently, he started to draw figures. I suppose it is my driver who is the boss who showed us his first sketch and then we provided the equipment regularly because immediately we found his drawings very interesting. They were always full of life, very expressive, always different, showing singular postures,” said Maïté Delteil
According to Mrs. Maïte Delteil, in Sukhlal’s way of working she could see all the main qualities necessary to become an artist in him like working hard , perseverance , imagination, liking to try different media, different supports and not afraid to undertake. However perhaps the best quality of Sukhlal is that he never seemed afraid of difficulty; instead he managed it with a kind of happy obstinacy.
According to Amrita Kochhar, gallerist of the Navya Naveli Gallery, “This art exhibition is being organized only to promote Sukhlal as an artist as he is underprivileged. This is not at all a commercial art exhibition but to support artist Sukhlal who is even happy to have the stroke of his brush with colour. He loves art and finds an escape but to support him none of the galleries were keen. He is a cook and do not have enough money to even paint. So we are organising this exhibition to promote him and from this exhibition whatever we are going to earn, we will give the whole amount to Sukhlal for his better career in the field of art. While discovering Sukhlal’s work and his journey we discovered the journey of creativity, passion and hard work of a young boy with no formal training in art. His journey is that of hard work, belief in oneself and the sheer desire to paint. Sukhlal’s love for art, the desire to paint a little everyday gave wings to his imagination and the art works created by him over one year are full of life and are joyful to see. The brilliant use of colour, the effortless strokes of the brush, the intricate detailing and story behind each work itself describes Sukhlal’s perspective and love for art and promises greater horizons and hope.”
