India took a 1-0 lead with a stellar performance, delivering what can be described as a dominating victory. It resembled the comprehensive win over South Africa in the World Cup. Despite missing key players like Kohli, Sharma, Bumrah, Shami, and Jadeja, India’s supremacy was evident. Arshdeep led the way, supported by an impressive performance from Avesh, resulting in the duo claiming 9 wickets, including a fifer from Arshdeep. Phehlukwayo’s 33 was a lone resistance as India efficiently wrapped up the innings in under 28 overs.
In response, despite debutant Sai opening, the task never seemed daunting. Ruturaj fell early, but Shreyas Iyer’s positive batting and contributions from Sai and Iyer, both scoring fifties, ensured a comfortable chase. Iyer departed with only 6 runs needed, and Varma came in to score the final run, concluding the first ODI with India taking the lead effortlessly. After choosing to bat, South Africa collapsed for a mere 116 runs. Arshdeep led his team off the field, raising the ball in triumph. Although India missed an opportunity to dismiss Hendricks on the first ball, Arshdeep quickly made amends by dismissing Hendricks and van der Dussen consecutively. Tony de Zorzi’s aggressive approach led to his downfall, and Arshdeep claimed his fourth victim by dismissing Klaasen, reducing South Africa to 52/4 in 10 overs.
Avesh Khan’s introduction intensified India’s dominance, taking advantage of seam-friendly conditions. The Indian bowlers executed straightforward plans, and the hosts’ situation worsened due to a combination of poor shots and helpful conditions for the seamers. Phehlukwayo top-scored with 33, but Arshdeep completed his maiden five-wicket haul by removing him in his final over. Kuldeep wrapped up the innings, leaving India with a target of 117 runs to win. India will likely approach the chase with confidence, considering the manageable target ahead of them.
