Increasing suicide cases are a matter of concern for us as a society. Be it in coaching hubs like Kota or renowned institutes like IIT, various colleges and universities across the country.
We often fail as a society because we do not see any problem as a collective mistake, rather we see a particular party as responsible for it, perhaps there is a one reason fits all case, but often This does not happen.
Every person has his struggle, every person has his unique social equations, and every person has his own fights. While fighting different kinds of battles at their levels, the patience of the individual wears out when pressured by some reasons, those reasons are often common to the whole student class.
Reasons lie at two different levels
The reasons for decreasing patience and persistence among students are at two levels. One at the personal level, and the other at the level of student life or environment.
Whenever there is a discussion of removing and reducing all these errors. Whenever there is a discussion that the self-confidence of the youth of the country should be strengthened, whenever appropriate work is required to reduce the increasing cases of student suicide in the country, then work should be done level-wise.
First, the problems arising on the common ground, and the points of adverse environment affecting all equally, should be considered.
In which work should be done on moral boosting in coaching/school/college, the focus should be given to positive competition in classes, how to deal with failure, how to reduce the glorification of victory, etc. Dreams of having photos on hoardings, getting money-package-seat, what work has to be done in that area, problems to come, this result.
Reforms need to be done at many levels, in many directions, on many surfaces, the common problem of the students should be resolved first, only then the family – economic – or personal issues need to be debated, otherwise without solution only Any statistics or discussions here and there are useless.
Stop Glorifying Victories
Many Coaching are running their system against the rules, secretly, by breaking the rules and regulations, excessively glorifying the victory and making the atmosphere unnecessarily stressful. Despite being aware of this, the administration, the government and the public watch this silently as if this is a part and parcel.
Raising issues and finding solutions to the issue are two different things.
Not only the students, but if a parent goes to Kota, even if he is confident about the ability of his very promising child, then as soon as he enters such a pressurized environment, and leaves the child, the parent himself starts having doubts even though he has seen a lot in comparison of that young child in terms of age and defeat, the parent is experienced; yet still, he starts doubting whether this promising child of mine will be able to pass this exam or not. Am I too high in the air that my child will pass the exam? Will all this hard-earned money go to waste? What if a precious year of my child has been wasted?
When all these questions can come to the mind of a parent who has come for admission purposes to a coaching institute in the city for just five or six days, then how will it not come to the mind of a young student who stays there, faces every day for a year, live there as being a part of the same system.
How will we be able to save him from suffering from an inferiority complex? how will we blame that; the guardian did not give him courage or support even when the guardian was not living with the child throughout. The parent has left his/her recent school pass out and is not a so-called mature child in the trust of the institution. Is it not the responsibility of the institution, of the system, of the environment, as a society to make the environment pleasant and defeat friendly?
One should start the problem by cutting it into the smallest pieces and at first should concentrate on the part, that is affecting all of the students at the same level, and the pressurized environment, which is like a pressure bubble not only impacting students but also every stakeholder including student’s parents, teachers and localities. Thus, it is our prime duty as a society and administration to foster a healthy environment at coaching hubs like Kota City in Rajasthan state. There should be a proper failure management course for the students and parents in which case studies about people’s success even after failure at one particular exam should be discussed. Fear of failure (FoF) should be minimized along with reducing the glorification of the success stories, as balance is the key to prosperity, growth and happiness. Only after this, another layer of parental support, personal mental health can be discussed or focused.
