An American Airlines flight from Los Angeles to New York was diverted to Phoenix Airport after passengers discovered lice in a woman’s hair mid-flight. The emergency landing was triggered by the surprising revelation, which left many travelers puzzled.

Ethan Judelson, a passenger on the flight, captured the confusion on TikTok, recounting the bizarre experience. “I look around, no one’s on the ground, no one’s freaking out. I’m like, it can’t be that dire. But we land, and as soon as we land, this woman across the aisle from me shoots up and rushes to the front of the plane,” Judelson said.

Once on the ground, passengers were informed by flight attendants that they would receive more information once they deboarded. They were told the next flight to New York would be delayed by 12 hours and were provided with hotel vouchers and $12 for expenses.

Judelson, along with other passengers, only learned the true cause of the diversion—lice outbreak—through informal discussions the following day. He confirmed the outbreak after encountering other passengers while purchasing a protein bar.

American Airlines’ Response

An American Airlines spokesperson addressed the incident, stating, “On June 15, American Airlines flight 2201 with service from Los Angeles (LAX) to New York (JFK) diverted to Phoenix (PHX) due to the medical needs of a customer.”

The situation highlights the unexpected challenges airlines may face and the diverse reasons for flight diversions.
