Speaking to the media on Tuesday, senior AIADMK leader Selur Raju welcomed Tamil star Thalapathy Vijay to politics and went a step further inviting him to join the AIADMK alliance. Former minister Selu Raju said, “Like MG Ramachandran (MGR), Vijay also wants to do service for the people and I congratulate him for this. He is yet to talk about the ideology and principles with regard to his party, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam. As far as AIADMK is concerned, the party doesn’t approach any party to form an alliance – till date we have not done that. If someone wants to form an alliance with us, they approach us. This is the principle that was followed by Amma (Dr J Jayalalithaa) and this is the same principle that party secretary Eddapadi K Palaniswami also follows now. Vijay can join the AIADMK alliance if he wishes and the terms of the alliance will be decided by Edappadi K Palaniswami.”
Meanwhile, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), on Tuesday announced that until the 2026 Assembly polls, it would not contest in any elections. Thus, the party will not be in the running for the upcoming Vikravandi bypoll to be held on July 10, and the local body elections. In a statement, TVK general secretary Bussy N. Anand said Vijay would make a public announcement on the party’s ideology and policy positions at the party’s first public meeting. “After that, Mr Vijay would work toward strengthening the party structure, meet people and contest in the 2026 Assembly elections…win it and engage in working for the people. Therefore, the party will not take part in any elections between now and the 2026 Assembly elections.”
Vijay launched his party on February 2 this year, positioning himself against the politics of “corruption” and “divisiveness.”
