Election campaigns for Panjab University’s student union (PUSU) elections in Chandigarh have been put on pause since Monday night. Student leaders on Tuesday went door-to-door to hostels and met with students one-on-one on campus as they appealed to the student body to vote in these elections. Voting will begin at 9:30 am today, 6 September. After that, the election results will start being announced around 12:00 noon. The Panjab University campus saw student leaders in full swing a day ahead of the elections, even though their official campaigns had come to an end.
The Chandigarh Police has also made arrangements for tight security on the campus as the student body goes to vote to decide its union leaders for this year. At present 100 policemen have been deployed in the university campus, but before the elections tomorrow around 1,000 policemen will be deployed. Police will keep an eye on every nook and corner of the university campus. Apart from the university, security has been increased in other colleges in the city as well.
On Monday night, Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti (CYSS) students were accused of assaulting PUSU president candidate Devendra Pal. In protest against this incident, many student organizations gathered and started protesting against CYSS. The protest ended after assurance from Chandigarh Police at around 10:30 pm. Chandigarh Police has assured investigation and strict action against the accused.
Four candidates are in the fray for the post of Vice President in the Panjab University Students’ Union elections. Among them, Dental student Ranmikjot Kaur is contesting on behalf of Satya. Whereas Anurag is a student of Vardhan University Institute of Engineering Technology. He is contesting the elections on behalf of INSO. Gaurav Chauhan, a student of the University Institute of Engineering and Technology, is contesting on behalf of ISA. Gaurav Kashiv is in the fray from HIMSU.
