Aam Admi Party’s Councillor of Ward No. 119, Manglapuri, Narender Kumar, has taken back his nomination for the Deputy Mayor election, which is slated to be held on April 26, 2024.

According to the MCD, Ravinder Bharadwaj from Aman Vihar, Narendra Kumar from Manglapuri, and Vijay Kumar from Trilokpuri have been nominated by the AAP for the post of Deputy Mayor. However, Vijay Kumar said in a post on X that he was not contesting the polls. Sources inside AAP clarified that the party’s sole candidate for the post is Ravinder Bharadwaj and that all extra nominations were filed purely to “cover all bases.” However, on Monday, April 22, AAP’s Councillor Narender Kumar retracted his nomination for deputy mayor. On the other hand, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has nominated Sadatpur councillor Neena Bisht for the post.

Last week, AAP’s Dev Nagar councillor Mahesh Khichi filed his nomination for the post of mayor, while the BJP’s Kishan Lal has been chosen for the post.

The Mayor is chosen by an electoral college, which comprises the 250 elected councillors; the seven Lok Sabha and three Rajya Sabha MPs belonging to the state; 14 MLAs who are conferred voting rights by the Assembly Speaker; and 10 aldermen who do not have voting rights in the House proceedings. AAP is likely to have the support of the three Rajya Sabha MPs, who are all members of the party, while the opposition will likely be backed by the seven Lok Sabha MPs, who belong to the BJP.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has called a meeting on April 26, 2024, for the election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor.
