Nigeria honored Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) during his visit, making him the second foreign dignitary to receive this prestigious award. Queen Elizabeth was the first to be conferred with the GCON in 1969. This marks the 17th international award bestowed upon PM Modi by a foreign country.
PM Modi concluded his first visit to Nigeria on Sunday, the first leg of his three-nation tour. Upon his arrival, he was warmly welcomed by Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, Minister for Federal Capital Territory in Abuja, and was presented with the ‘Key to the City’ of Abuja, symbolizing the trust and honor given to him by the people of Nigeria.
This visit is significant as it is the first time in 17 years that an Indian Prime Minister has visited Nigeria. On Sunday evening, PM Modi departed for Brazil as part of his three-nation tour to Nigeria, Brazil, and Guyana, scheduled from November 17 to November 21.
