The Dwarka cyber police detained a 32-year-old man on August 20 for allegedly fabricating a phoney social media profile with lewd descriptions and images of a woman and sending lewd messages and images to her after she ignored him.

According to the police, the suspect is a plastic products trader named Mahaveer Singh, and years ago, his brother used to live in the same building as the woman.

A complaint has been lodged at the Cyber Police Station against an unidentified person for making two social media accounts using the woman’s identity and a false social media profile with obscene descriptions and images of the woman. According to the complaint, the woman also received offensive messages and images. The Information Technology Conduct’s Sections 67 and 67A (penalty for electronically conveying obscenity in electronic form or a sexual act in electronic form) were then invoked, and on August 20 a case was registered.

The offender was found and apprehended at Mahavir Enclave after the details of the bogus social media profiles were retrieved and analysed, according to the police.

“The accused’s brother used to reside on the first floor of the same building as the complainant on rent 8–9 years ago, and he had known her since then. He created fake social media profiles using her photos and uploaded them after she did not reply to his messages on social media,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Harsha Vardhan said.
