Millions of people remain displaced, hungry, and fearful of bombs, especially in Palestinian territories where Jesus Christ was born. On Christmas Eve, Pope Francis called for hope and courage to address the world’s many wrongs. Speaking from St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City, he urged Christians worldwide to reflect on the horrors of war and violence and take action.
A Call to Confront Injustice
In his message, Francis asked Christians to think about the suffering caused by conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine. He mentioned “wars, machine-gunned children, bombs on schools or hospitals” to highlight the toll of violence. As Israeli airstrikes continue in Gaza and Russian bombs target Ukraine, innocent civilians suffer daily.
Hope in Times of Suffering
However, Francis reminded people that Jesus, born to humble parents, showed that anyone can make a difference. He explained that hope isn’t about a “happy ending” but about embracing the promise of change even in hard times. Furthermore, he encouraged people not to fall into mediocrity but to take action to correct wrongs.
“Hope calls us to be upset with things that are wrong and to find the courage to change them,” Francis said. He urged Christians to stay hopeful and to dream of a world where peace and justice prevail.
Hope for All
Additionally, Pope Francis emphasized that everyone can make a difference. He said it is our duty to bring hope to those who have lost it. “We are called to bring hope to the weary, the lonely, and the broken-hearted,” he said. He also called for hope for those suffering from war, poverty, and violence.
A Call for Debt Relief and Renewal
In addition to his plea for hope, Francis also called for debt cancellation for developing nations during this year’s Jubilee. Reflecting on a similar call made by Pope John Paul II, which resulted in $130 billion in debt relief, Francis urged action. He said, “The Jubilee calls us to spiritual renewal and commits us to the transformation of our world.”
