Lara Trump, who is married to Eric Trump, stepped down earlier this month as co-chairwoman of the Republican National Committee (RNC), further fueling rumors about her potential candidacy. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is expected to appoint Rubio’s replacement, who is anticipated to resign from the Senate when Trump takes office on January 20.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Lara Trump expressed her decision to remove herself from consideration, stating it followed “an incredible amount of thought, contemplation, and encouragement from so many.” She extended her best wishes to Governor DeSantis as he prepares to select a successor to serve the remainder of Rubio’s six-year term, which ends in 2026.
“I could not have been more honored to serve as RNC co-chair during the most high-stakes election of our lifetime, and I’m truly humbled by the unbelievable support shown to me by the people of our country, and here in the great state of Florida,” she wrote.
Lara Trump hinted at a “big announcement” to come in January but did not disclose any specifics. She emphasized her ongoing passion for public service and her desire to serve again in the future.
Governor DeSantis noted last month that there is already significant interest from potential candidates to fill Rubio’s seat, with a selection likely to be made by early January.
Born Lara Lea Yunaska on October 12, 1982, she is an American television producer, campaign advisor, and former host. In March, she was elected as RNC co-chair, reinforcing her father-in-law’s influence over the Republican Party during his presidential campaign. Alongside her husband Eric and brother-in-law Don Jr., Lara Trump became one of the prominent campaign surrogates for the Republican candidate in the lead-up to the election.
