19-Year Old TikTok Star Beandri Booysen Passes Away After Battling Rare Aging Disease

Beandri Booysen, a 19-year-old TikTok star from South Africa, died after boldly fighting Progeria- a rare genetic disorder that creates rapid aging. Her mom, Bea Booysen, confirmed the heart wrenching news on Facebook saying that “It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Beandri, one of South Africa’s most beloved and inspiring young women.

Before her death, Beandri underwent an open-heart surgery and even wished to spend Christmas with her family. Other conditions she had were osteoporosis and aortic stenosis, which is the narrow opening of the aorta-the main artery carrying blood from the heart. Beandri, despite all these, was so popular on TikTok and had over 278,000 followers. Through her videos, she spread joy, hope, and inspiration as well as raising awareness for people with Progeria and other special needs.

Beandri’s story touched countless hearts, and tributes from fans and fellow creators have been pouring in, praising her strength and positive spirit. A person commented on Facebook, “So sad. What an inspiration she was. Fly high with the angels sweet girl.” Another said, “Prayers for the family for the loss of such a precious little young lady.”

What is Progeria?

Progeria, Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome (HGPS), is a very rare genetic condition that affects one in four million children. It is characterized by fast aging, brittle bones, and other health issues like cardiovascular diseases.

Symptoms of Progeria are as follows:

  • Rapid aging, wrinkled skin, hair loss, joint stiffness
  • Growth retardation and short stature
  • Weight loss due to metabolic changes
  • Risk of heart disease and stroke with other cardiovascular issues
  • Stiffness in the joints and muscle weakness leading to immobility

Causes, Diagnosis, and Treatment

Progeria is caused by a mutation in the LMNA gene, which encodes for the lamin A protein that maintains the structure of cells. The diagnosis is done through genetic testing, physical exams, and imaging tests.

Although there is no cure for Progeria, treatments can be used to manage symptoms and slow the progression of the disease, such as:

  • Growth hormone therapy to enhance development
  • Cardiovascular medications to control heart disease
  • Physical therapy to maintain mobility and strength
  • Pain management to decrease pain

Most children suffering from Progeria have survived to about 14 years of age, however some of them survive into the late teens or early twenties.
