At least three have died and dozens more have been injured after an explosive device was thrown into a crowd at a music festival in Umphang, Tak province, Thailand. This explosion happened just before midnight on Friday during an outdoor performance at the annual festival, according to local officials from the Association of Umphang Rescue Groups.
Thai police have arrested two suspects in relation to the incident, although no charges have been filed yet as the investigation continues. Authorities reported that at least 48 people were injured in the blast, many of whom suffered injuries of varying severity.
Defense Ministry spokesperson Thanathip Sawangsang said that a fight between rival groups of men preceded the explosion and that evidence suggested the explosive device was a homemade bomb. Despite the violence, authorities have emphasized there is no wider security threat in the area.
The explosion occurred in Tak, a province that has intense military presence because it sits close to the border with Myanmar. Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra extended her condolences on the incident and ordered her local security forces to deeply investigate the incident and to come up with ways to help the affected citizens.
The government spokesperson, Jirayu Houngsap, said additional security personnel have been sent to the area to provide support and ensure public safety.
