Actress Dies After Frog Venom Cleansing Ritual at Spiritual Retreat

Marcela Alcázar Rodríguez died at the age of 33. This Mexican is an actress, and death came to her after she carried out a ritual of purifying with Kambo at a spiritual center in Mayocoyani, Durango. The ritual comes from Amazonian frog venom-which is considered to sometimes be fatal.

It is practiced as a detoxification procedure in the traditional South American Kambo ritual. One has to drink more than a litre of water followed by small burns made on his skin. Frog mucus containing venom is then applied on these burns.

It also causes many other effects that include a rise in blood pressure, vomiting, diarrhoea, dizziness, and swelling of the lips and face. These effects usually take about 30 minutes, are considered a part of the “healing” process, and yet still can cause convulsion and even death if they last any longer, reports say.

What happened to Marcela Alcázar Rodríguez?

Rodríguez reportedly experienced severe vomiting and diarrhoea shortly after beginning the ritual. These symptoms are often regarded as cleansing reactions. Initially, she declined assistance but eventually sought help when a friend visited her.

A shaman at the retreat allegedly told her she couldn’t leave during the process. But as her condition became worse, the shaman ran off from the area. Currently, police are conducting investigations to try to find the culprit.

Obituary of the Actress

In remembrance, the Durango Film Guild created a heartfelt tribute for Rodríguez on social media right after her death. According to them, Rodríguez “was a young woman who worked in various short films, series, and movies filmed in Durango.”

The tribute continued, “She leaves a void in the hearts of the people who knew her working in what she loved: cinema.”

Rodríguez’s untimely death highlighted the risks of unregulated spiritual practices and the need for caution during those kinds of rituals.
