Islamabad’s Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Monday issued non-bailable arrest warrants for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, his wife Bushra Bibi, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, and 93 other party leaders. The warrants stem from allegations of rioting, violence, and conspiracy during protests in the federal capital last week.
Allegations and Protests
The protests, called by Imran Khan on November 13, aimed to demand:
- Restoration of PTI’s electoral mandate.
- Release of detained party members.
- Reversal of the controversial 26th Amendment, which Khan claims consolidates a “dictatorial regime.”
The demonstrations escalated into three days of clashes, resulting in six deaths, including a policeman and three Rangers personnel. Conflicting claims have emerged over law enforcement actions and fatalities.
Key FIR Allegations
An FIR registered on November 26 at Kohsar Police Station, led by SHO Muhammad Imran, names 96 suspects, including top PTI leaders such as:
- Former President Arif Alvi.
- Ex-National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser.
- Leaders Omar Ayub, Shoaib Shaheen, Zartaj Gul, and others.
Key Allegations Include:
- Conspiracy to attack law enforcement.
- Using government employees for protests.
- Creating fear and inciting violence.
Arrest Warrants and Legal Charges
ATC Judge Tahir Abbas Sipra approved police requests for arrest warrants under various legal provisions, including:
- Pakistan Penal Code.
- Anti-Terrorism Act.
- Peaceful Assembly and Public Order Act, 2024.
The charges encompass rioting, conspiracy, promoting enmity, attempted murder, and acts of terrorism. Authorities allege that protesters used explosives, caused significant damage, and endangered public safety.
Political Repercussions
The crackdown has reignited political tensions in Pakistan, with PTI leaders condemning the actions as an attempt to stifle dissent. Authorities argue the measures are necessary to restore law and order.
