Congress alleges corruption involving Assam CM and Adani Group, calls for discussion

The Assam Congress has called for a detailed discussion on the 90 MW solar power project established by Azure Power and Adani Green in the state, alleging corruption involving Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the Adani Group. The demand comes amid calls for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to probe Adani Group’s alleged irregularities.

Allegations Against CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

Speaking to ANI, Assam Congress president Bhupen Kumar Borah accused CM Himanta Biswa Sarma of being involved in a “solar scam.”

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi is protecting Gautam Adani, and Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, the most corrupt Chief Minister in India, is complicit in this scam,” Borah alleged. He claimed that the solar project was initiated after Adani’s visit to Assam in August 2021 and inaugurated by Sarma in February 2022.

The project, established by Adani Green and Mauritius-based Azure Power, involved a 25-year agreement with Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) for purchasing power from the plant.

Links to Andhra Pradesh Solar Deal

Borah further connected the Assam solar project to a similar deal in Andhra Pradesh, citing US court documents.

“According to these documents, the then Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy signed a 7,000 MW solar power agreement with Adani Group. Allegations suggest Rs 25 lakh was paid per MW to the Chief Minister. Similarly, in Assam, a 90 MW solar project was initiated under questionable circumstances,” Borah stated.

Concerns Over Tribal Land in Dima Hasao

The Assam Congress also raised concerns about alleged plans to allocate 7,000 bighas of tribal land in the Dima Hasao district to the Adani Group.

“The CM is facilitating this land transfer to Gautam Adani. When our leader Rahul Gandhi raises this issue in Parliament, it must be included in the JPC inquiry,” Borah said. He reiterated Congress’s commitment to holding all parties accountable, regardless of their political affiliations.

Rahul Gandhi’s Call for Adani’s Arrest

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has consistently criticized the Adani Group, calling for Gautam Adani’s arrest. Gandhi has claimed that evidence clearly establishes violations of both American and Indian laws by the Adani Group, allegations which the company has denied.

Adani Group’s Denial

The Adani Group has refuted allegations made by the US Department of Justice and the US Securities and Exchange Commission against its directors, maintaining that it has adhered to all legal requirements.

Congress Pushes for Transparency

Borah concluded by questioning the disparity in enforcement against alleged corruption.

“If Chief Ministers of Jharkhand and Delhi can be arrested for scams worth Rs 30-40 crore, why not Gautam Adani? Our demand is simple—start the inquiry with Adani and extend it to those involved, including Assam’s CM,” Borah said.

The Congress has made it clear that the solar power project and the alleged involvement of prominent political figures will remain a key issue in its ongoing campaign for transparency and accountability.
