Speaking at the Bay of Bengal Conversation organized by the Centre for Governance Studies (CGS) in Dhaka on Sunday, Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma reaffirmed India’s commitment to fostering a stable, positive, and constructive relationship with Bangladesh, emphasizing that the people of both nations remain the primary stakeholders in this partnership.
“The fact that our trade and economic ties, our transport and energy connectivity, and our people-to-people engagements have sustained a positive momentum, despite the turbulent changes in Bangladesh, shows that our relations are truly multifaceted, and cannot be reduced to a single agenda or issue. There are irritants, but they have not restricted the overall forward movement in our relations. As two nations whose progress and prosperity are as inter-linked as our geographies and historical roots, the reality of our interdependence and mutual benefit will keep reasserting itself again and again, regardless of changes in the political wind,” Verma said.

Highlighting the depth of the bilateral relationship, the High Commissioner noted that India takes a long-term perspective on its ties with Bangladesh, acknowledging that the peace, security, and prosperity of both countries are closely intertwined. He pointed to sustained progress in trade, transport, energy connectivity, and people-to-people engagements as evidence of these multifaceted ties, underlining that their interdependence and mutual benefits persist regardless of political shifts.
As examples of recent milestones in bilateral cooperation, Verma cited the launch of 40 MW power transmission from Nepal to Bangladesh via the Indian grid and the enhancement of infrastructure at the Petrapole-Benapole Integrated Check Post, both achieved this month. He described India-Bangladesh collaboration as a cornerstone for regional integration envisioned under frameworks like BIMSTEC.
The High Commissioner reiterated India’s dedication to working closely with the government and people of Bangladesh to achieve shared goals of peace, security, and development. He stressed that the partnership aims to continue delivering tangible benefits to the citizens of both nations.
