In the spiritual town of Mathura, a new celebrity has captured the hearts of locals—Chiku Ustad, a playful monkey with a peculiar daily routine. Every day, Chiku eagerly joins the Brijwasis, local devotees, in consuming bhang, making him a cherished part of their rituals.
A Monkey with a Unique Habit
Roaming freely around the temples and streets of Mathura, Chiku Ustad isn’t just another monkey. His daily wait for a share of bhang, offered by the devotees, has made him an endearing mascot. His presence adds a humorous and charming twist to the town’s spiritual traditions.
What Is Bhang?
Bhang, an edible preparation made from the leaves of the cannabis plant, originated in the Indian subcontinent and has been used in food and drink since as early as 1000 BC. Traditionally, it is consumed during the spring festivals of Holi and Maha Shivaratri. Bhang is primarily sold in specialized shops, where it is used to prepare cannabis-infused beverages such as bhang lassi and bhang thandai.
