Dominique Pelicot, a 71-year-old man accused of drugging his wife and arranging for strangers to rape her, has pleaded guilty in a trial that has shocked many. His chilling statements in court, particularly an eight-word remark about organising mass rapes, have left a lasting impact on those following the case.

The Charges Against Dominique Pelicot

Dominique, along with 50 other men, faces charges of aggravated rape. During the trial, Pelicot, while addressing the other accused, said, “I am a rapist, like everyone else in this courtroom.” His actions have led many, including his own daughter, to label him as “one of the greatest sexual predators.”

How Police Uncovered the Crimes

Dominique’s wife, Gisele Pelicot, was unaware of the abuse as he regularly drugged her using sleeping pills and anti-anxiety medications. His crimes came to light in 2020, when police arrested him for filming under women’s skirts. During their investigation, authorities found recordings on Dominique’s laptop that provided evidence of the rapes. These recordings allowed police to identify and track down 72 suspects involved in the assaults.

When police first contacted Gisele, she believed her husband was a “great guy.” However, after learning the horrifying truth, she divorced him, ending their 50-year marriage. They have three children together.

Family Allegations

Dominique’s daughter has also spoken out, revealing that her father subjected her to similar abuse. Nude photos of the daughter were found on Dominique’s computer, further deepening the horror of his actions. She has since written a book detailing the trauma caused by her father.

Delays in the Trial

The trial was delayed due to Dominique’s health issues, including kidney stones and a urinary infection. If convicted, Dominique faces up to 20 years in prison for his appalling crimes.

This case stands as one of the most disturbing criminal trials in recent French history.
