Junior doctors from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital arrived at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence in Kalighat on Monday evening for a scheduled meeting to present their “five-point demands.” This meeting comes in the wake of protests over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor on August 9. The doctors were accompanied by two stenographers to assist with the proceedings.
Previous meetings between the junior doctors and the Chief Minister did not occur due to concerns about transparency. However, after a series of emails with the Chief Secretary earlier today, the junior doctors agreed to meet with the Chief Minister. The Chief Secretary assured that the meeting minutes would be signed by both parties and shared to ensure mutual understanding of the discussions.
This was the fifth invitation extended by the Chief Minister for a meeting with the junior doctors. In a letter to them, she stated, “This is the fifth and final time we are reaching out to you for a meeting between the Honourable Chief Minister and your delegates. In line with our discussion from the day before, we once again invite you to a meeting with the Honourable Chief Minister at her Kalighat residence for an open-minded discussion.”

Simultaneously, the West Bengal Junior Doctor Front held a press conference in Delhi today, where they reiterated their “five-point demand.” Among these demands are the removal of the Kolkata Commissioner of Police and the replacement of senior officials in the Health Department and Family Welfare Department of the West Bengal Government.
