The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on Sunday that the deep depression formed over Gangetic West Bengal and neighboring Bangladesh is moving westward. Within 24 hours, it is expected to weaken into a ‘depression.’ The IMD has issued warnings of “very heavy to heavy rainfall” for several areas in Gangetic West Bengal, including Kolkata, and predicts “extremely heavy rainfall” in isolated areas in the southern part of the region.
According to the IMD, the deep depression is likely to continue its westward movement, maintaining its intensity until Sunday evening before gradually weakening within the next 24 hours. The IMD posted on the microblogging site X: “The deep depression over Gangetic West Bengal moved slowly westward at a speed of 8 km/h over the past six hours. At 0530 hours IST on September 15, 2024, it was centered near latitude 22.6° N and longitude 88.0° E, about 40 km west-northwest of Kolkata, 130 km east-southeast of Bankura (West Bengal), 190 km east of Jamshedpur (Jharkhand), and 290 km east-southeast of Ranchi (Jharkhand).”
The IMD further stated, “The system is expected to move westward across Gangetic West Bengal, maintaining its intensity until this evening. It will then proceed to move nearly westward across Jharkhand and North Chhattisgarh, gradually weakening into a depression over the following 24 hours. The deep depression is under continuous surveillance by the Doppler Weather Radar in Kolkata.”
In addition to this, the IMD has issued a rainfall alert for today for isolated areas in Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, predicting “very heavy to heavy rainfall.”
A press release dated September 14 indicated, “Light to moderate rainfall is very likely in most places, with heavy to very heavy rainfall in some areas of Gangetic West Bengal, and extremely heavy rainfall in isolated places in southern Gangetic West Bengal on September 14. Heavy rainfall is expected in isolated places on September 15.”

The press release also mentioned, “Odisha is likely to experience light to moderate rainfall in most areas, with heavy to very heavy rainfall in some places and extremely heavy rainfall in isolated northern areas on September 14. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in isolated areas on September 15, and heavy rainfall in isolated places on September 16.”
