In a joint operation, the Border Security Force (BSF) and local police intercepted two Indian nationals attempting to smuggle a large quantity of sugar into Bangladesh near the Lyngkhat border area in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district. The operation, conducted by troops from the 4th Battalion of BSF Meghalaya, resulted in the seizure of three vehicles carrying approximately 74,000 kg of sugar.

According to a press release from the Meghalaya Frontier BSF, the suspects were stopped on Saturday while transporting the sugar in three trucks near the Indo-Bangladesh border. The drivers were unable to produce valid documents for the consignment, leading to their arrest. Both the sugar and the apprehended individuals have been handed over to Pynursla Police Station for further investigation and legal action.

The BSF Meghalaya, in a post on the social media platform X, said, “A successful joint operation by BSF Meghalaya and Meghalaya Police in East Khasi Hills led to the apprehension of two Indian nationals and the confiscation of 74,000 kg of sugar intended for smuggling into Bangladesh.”

This interception follows another operation by BSF Meghalaya on August 22, where four Bangladeshi nationals, including three women, were apprehended in the East Jaintia Hills district while attempting to infiltrate India. Two Indian facilitators aiding the illegal crossing were also arrested.

BSF Meghalaya has ramped up its efforts to combat illegal crossings and smuggling activities along the Indo-Bangladesh border, implementing a multi-tiered dominance strategy to curb such incidents. The intercepted illegal migrants and their accomplices have been handed over to local police for further legal proceedings.
