A delegation of resident doctors met with Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials on Friday to discuss the alleged sexual assault and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal. However, the delegation expressed dissatisfaction with the CBI’s responses, highlighting their frustration over the lack of a definitive timeline for the investigation.
Dr. Kinjal, a representative of the delegation, stating that their request for a time frame to identify those involved in the case was met with disappointment. “Our delegation of five people met with the CBI at the CGO Complex, but we didn’t receive any satisfactory answers. Our only demand is justice,” Dr. Kinjal said. He emphasized that the ongoing protests by resident doctors are centered on ensuring justice for the trainee doctor, and the delegation urged the CBI to expedite the investigation.
The CBI, however, informed the delegation that while they are working on the case, it is not feasible to set a specific time limit for the investigation’s completion. Dr. Kinjal added that the CBI requested the doctors to keep faith in the ongoing inquiry. Despite the assurances, the delegation remains anxious for concrete answers, which would allow them to determine the future course of their protests.
As part of the ongoing investigation, outpatient departments (OPDs) at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital are currently not operational due to the protests. However, emergency services continue to function, with senior doctors attending to patients.
Meanwhile, a team from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in Delhi arrived in Kolkata to conduct polygraph tests on former RG Kar Medical College principal Sandip Ghosh and others involved in the case. According to sources, the polygraph tests will be conducted on Sandip Ghosh, Sanjay Roy (the main accused), four doctors, and one volunteer. These tests are expected to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the alleged rape and murder of the trainee doctor.
Additionally, Kolkata police confirmed that all documents related to alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College have been handed over to the CBI by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) as per a court order. The CBI has been granted three weeks to submit a progress report on the investigation, with a presentation due in court on September 17.
The tragic incident took place on August 9 when the trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, leading to widespread protests and calls for justice from the medical community.
