Kolkata Police have released a detailed timeline of events in the ongoing investigation into the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College. The case, which has generated widespread outrage, saw significant developments in the past few weeks.
According to police notes, Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, was examined and his statement was recorded on August 13, three days after the crime. This detail was previously undisclosed. The Supreme Court has been scrutinizing Ghosh’s involvement since August 9, the day of the incident.
Key issues have arisen regarding the delay in filing the FIR. The hospital reportedly opted to send a confidential intimation six hours after a PG student discovered the victim’s body. The FIR was eventually lodged by the victim’s parents at 11:45 PM on August 9, nearly 14 hours after the body was found. This delay has raised critical questions about the hospital’s handling of the case.
Sanjay Roy, the prime suspect, was arrested within 10 hours of the FIR being filed. He was found to have several injuries, including scratches on his left cheek and abrasions on his left hand and thigh. His mobile phone was seized the same day, but data extraction took an additional two days. Roy’s medico-legal examination was conducted at SSKM Hospital, where samples were collected for forensic analysis.
On August 13, forensic exhibits from the crime scene and post-mortem were forwarded to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) for further analysis. However, there were unexplained delays in this process as well.
Roy’s involvement was confirmed through CCTV footage, which showed him entering and exiting the seminar hall where the crime occurred. A discarded earphone near the victim’s body also led investigators to Roy. It was later revealed that Roy, a civic police volunteer, had been involved in managing police personnel for the ruling Trinamool Congress.
The investigation has included extensive evidence collection, including blood samples from Roy and forensic analysis of his phone. Statements have been recorded from multiple individuals, including hospital staff and the victim’s colleagues.
By August 13, forensic and DNA analysis of the evidence had been completed, and Roy’s mobile phone data was extracted in court. Notices were served to 16 individuals for their statements. Roy remains in police custody, with further proceedings scheduled until August 23.
