India to Send Record 84 Athletes to Paris 2024 Paralympics, Competing in 12 Sports

India has announced a contingent of 84 athletes for the Paris 2024 Paralympics, set to take place from August 28 to September 8. This marks India’s largest ever delegation to the Paralympic Games.

At the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, India sent 54 athletes, including 14 women. For Paris 2024, the contingent has expanded to 84 athletes, with 32 women included, according to Olympics.com.

India will be competing in three new sports at the Paris Paralympics: para-cycling, para-rowing, and blind judo, bringing the country’s total sports participation to 12. The Paris Games will feature 22 sports overall.

In para-cycling, Arshad Shaik will participate in the men’s C2 events, while Jyoti Gaderiya will compete in the women’s C2 category. In blind judo, Kapil Parmar will take part in the men’s 60kg J1 event, and Kokila will compete in the women’s 48kg J2 category. Anita and K. Narayana will represent India in the PR3 mixed doubles sculls in para-rowing.

India’s performance at Tokyo 2020 was its best ever at the Paralympics, with the country winning 19 medals—five gold, eight silver, and six bronze.

Returning athletes include Avani Lekhara, who won gold in the women’s R2 10m air rifle standing SH1 event at Tokyo 2020, tying the world record. She was the first Indian woman to win a Paralympic gold medal. Also returning is Sumit Antil, the men’s F64 javelin thrower who won gold at Tokyo 2020 and is a two-time world champion, holding the world record with a 73.29m throw from the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou last year.

Table tennis player Bhavina Patel, who secured India’s first Paralympic medal in the sport, will compete in the women’s singles and partner with Sonalben Patel in the women’s doubles.

Harvinder Singh, who made history as the first Indian to win an archery medal at the Paralympics in Tokyo, will compete in the men’s individual recurve open and mixed team recurve open in the ST category.
