Sheikh Hasina and her sister boarded a military helicopter and fled the country on Monday, fleeing the violent quota protests that have gripped Dhaka. Her aircraft landed at Hindon Air Base in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, India, and she is expected to soon travel to London.
In the wake of the turmoil, Bangladesh Army Chief Gen. Waker-uz-Zaman has sought to reassure the public. He has promised that order will be restored and has engaged with opposition politicians and civil society leaders to discuss the formation of an interim government. Gen. Zaman also pledged a thorough investigation into the violent crackdown on student-led protests that fueled the current unrest. “Keep faith in the military; we will investigate all the killings and punish the responsible,” he assured, emphasizing that security forces have been instructed not to fire on crowds.
