Family’s Ladakh Vacation Turns Into A Nightmare: Man Shares Difficult Experience

A recent trip to Ladakh turned into a challenging experience for X user Kirubakaran Rajendran and his family, as they struggled to acclimatise to the high altitude. Ladakh, known for its stunning landscapes and unique culture, is a popular destination for many travelers. However, its high altitude can pose significant challenges, particularly in terms of acclimatisation.

Rajendran shared his experience on social media, detailing how the issues began as soon as they landed at Leh airport. The family encountered severe breathing difficulties, a common problem in regions with thin air and low oxygen levels. He mentioned that traveling to popular spots like Nubra Valley or Hanle required crossing high passes such as Khardung La Pass, located at 18,000 feet. At such altitudes, oxygen levels are significantly reduced, making it difficult for even seasoned travelers to breathe. Rajendran highlighted that cab drivers often advise against standing outside at these peaks for more than 10 minutes due to the lack of oxygen.

Despite waiting for two days to acclimatise, the family couldn’t adjust to the altitude and decided to cut their trip short, returning home. Rajendran advised future travelers to prepare for such scenarios and consider the potential difficulties of acclimatisation, even during the seemingly ideal summer months. He emphasized that while Ladakh is undoubtedly beautiful, its environment might not suit everyone.

The post, shared on July 30, quickly went viral, garnering over 4.1 million views. The response was mixed, with some users sharing their own experiences and offering advice. One user suggested visiting a local hospital for treatment, noting that some people are more susceptible to high-altitude sickness. Another advised against flying directly into Leh, recommending a gradual ascent from Srinagar to help acclimatise. A third user commended Rajendran’s decision to return home, noting that not acclimatising within two days is a serious concern.

The conversation around Rajendran’s experience highlights the importance of being well-prepared for travel to high-altitude destinations like Ladakh.
