Imphal: A 28-year-old woman and her baby son were killed, while her husband critically injured after a heavy landslide set off by incessant rains buried their house at the headquarters of Zeliangrong-Naga dominated Tamenglong district late on Monday night, police sources said.

The tragic incident occurred around 11.50 pm at the placid Dimthanlong village Ward No 3 about 145 km from Imphal, and the ill-starred house belongs to the injured Ringsinlung Kahmei, aged 32 who originally hails from Tabanglong village in the district.

Amid heavy downpour , the neighbours, who heard a loud sound of collapsing Kahmei’s house caused by the landslide, rushed there and straightway started rescue works, local sources said.

They then pulled out Kahmei , his wife, Duanzaengliu and their two-year-old son from the debris , the sources said, adding that Kahmei is currently serving as a police constable in the district.

Duanzaengliu (28) and her son breathed their last on the way to the nearby government-run district hospital, while Kahmei was evacuated to Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal East district for further treatment.

On hearing the heart wrenching news, chief minister N Biren Singh expressed his utmost grief to the bereaved family and prayed for Kahmei’s speedy recovery.

Biren took to Facebook and said “Deeply saddened to learn about the tragic loss of a mother and her child due to the landslide that occurred last night in Dimthanlong village, Tamenglong Ward No. 3. My heart goes out to the bereaved family.”

“Our thoughts are with Mr. Ringsinlung Kahmei, who has been critically injured in this incident. We are taking immediate steps to ensure he receives the necessary medical attention and advanced care,” he added.

The mortal remains of the mother-son duo were taken to Tabanglong village for performing the last rites on Tuesday.
