Kolkata Faces Surge In Viral Infections: Flu, Dengue, And More

Kolkata is seeing a rise in viral infections, including influenza, conjunctivitis, Covid, dengue, and diarrhea. Experts say that the main cause is the influenza A virus, which is leading to a surge in cases. Some elderly patients and those with existing health conditions may even require hospitalization.

Who Should Get Vaccinated?

Experts recommend that the following groups get vaccinated against influenza:

– Children up to 5 years old
– Adults over 65 years old
– Pregnant women
– People with existing health conditions

Dr. Chandramouli Bhattacharya, an infectious disease specialist, noted that the H1N1 and H3N2 strains of influenza A are common in this outbreak. He emphasized that vaccination is an effective way to protect against the flu, especially during the monsoon and winter seasons.

Symptoms and Precautions

Flu symptoms typically include a high fever (around 102 to 103 degrees Fahrenheit) lasting two to three days. For those with respiratory symptoms, many children are testing positive for influenza.

Dr. Siddhartha Ghosh mentioned that there has also been an increase in conjunctivitis, leading to symptoms like pink eyes and irritation. People with conjunctivitis should avoid school, work, swimming, and wearing contact lenses until they recover.

Dengue Alert

There has been a rise in dengue cases in Kolkata. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation reported 40 new cases in just one week until July 21, with a total of 184 cases this year.

Tips to Prevent Viral Infections

1. Maintain Hygiene: Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, or use hand sanitizer when soap isn’t available.
2. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids like water, herbal teas, and fresh juices to support your immune system. Avoid sugary drinks.
3. Balanced Diet: Eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains to boost your immune system.
4. Use Insect Repellents: To protect against mosquitoes that can transmit dengue and malaria, use repellents, wear long sleeves, and ensure your home is mosquito-free.
5. Boost Immunity: Consider taking supplements like Vitamin C, Vitamin D, and zinc after consulting with your doctor.
6. Avoid Stagnant Water: Prevent mosquito breeding by avoiding stagnant water around your home and cleaning water containers regularly.
7. Stay Clean and Dry: Keep yourself and your living space dry to avoid fungal infections and respiratory issues. Change wet clothes promptly and ensure good ventilation in your home.
