Record Tourist Influx In J&K: Over 10 Million Visitors By June 2024, Reports Centre

The Centre reported on Wednesday that over 10 million tourists have flocked to Jammu and Kashmir by June this year, indicating a robust revival in the region’s tourism sector.

In response to a query from MP Dinesh Sharma, Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai highlighted the significant surge in tourism in J&K following the abrogation of Article 370.

Minister Rai detailed the yearly tourist statistics, showing an impressive upward trend: 3,470,834 visitors in 2020, 11,314,884 in 2021, 18,864,332 in 2022, and 21,124,874 in 2023. This year, the figures have already reached 10,841,009 by June, marking a significant milestone.

“The Government of Jammu and Kashmir attributes this remarkable improvement to various strategic measures, including the implementation of the Tourism Policy 2020 and the conferral of industry status to the tourism sector under the Jammu and Kashmir Industrial Policy 2021,” he said.

The minister elaborated that these initiatives have played a crucial role in transforming the region’s tourism landscape. The Tourism Policy 2020 has streamlined various aspects of tourism management, including infrastructure development, marketing, and sustainable tourism practices. Additionally, the industry status provided under the Jammu and Kashmir Industrial Policy 2021 has enabled the tourism sector to avail various incentives and subsidies, further propelling growth.

In addition to policy measures, the Centre and the J&K administration have focused on improving connectivity and infrastructure. Significant investments have been made in road networks, airport facilities, and public amenities, making the region more accessible and comfortable for tourists. The development of new tourist circuits and the promotion of lesser-known destinations within J&K have also contributed to the surge in visitor numbers.

Furthermore, the government has actively promoted cultural tourism by organizing various festivals and events showcasing the rich heritage of Jammu and Kashmir. These events have not only attracted domestic tourists but have also garnered international attention, positioning J&K as a premier global tourist destination.

Safety and security have also been prioritized, with enhanced measures ensuring a safe environment for tourists. The stability and improved law and order situation post-abrogation of Article 370 have significantly boosted tourists’ confidence in visiting the region.

The local hospitality industry has benefitted immensely from this tourist influx. Hotels, restaurants, and local businesses have reported increased revenues, leading to job creation and economic upliftment of the local population. The homestay initiative, encouraging locals to offer accommodation to tourists, has been particularly successful, providing an authentic experience to visitors while economically empowering residents.

Environmental conservation efforts have also been integrated into tourism development plans. Initiatives aimed at preserving the natural beauty and ecological balance of the region have been implemented to ensure sustainable tourism growth. The government has encouraged eco-friendly practices among tourists and businesses alike, promoting responsible tourism.

The surge in tourism has also led to increased foreign exchange earnings, contributing positively to the region’s economy. With a diversified tourist base, including adventure seekers, nature enthusiasts, and cultural explorers, Jammu and Kashmir are witnessing a holistic growth in its tourism sector.

The Centre’s data underscores the effectiveness of these policies in fostering a thriving tourism environment in J&K. The minister’s remarks reflect the central government’s commitment to further enhancing the region’s tourism potential, ensuring sustained growth and development in the coming years.

Looking ahead, the government plans to continue its focus on infrastructural development, promotional activities, and policy support to maintain the momentum in the tourism sector. Collaborative efforts with private stakeholders and community participation are also being encouraged to create a vibrant and inclusive tourism ecosystem in Jammu and Kashmir.

In summary, the unprecedented growth in tourist numbers in J&K this year is a testament to the successful implementation of strategic measures by the government. As the region continues to welcome a record number of visitors, the positive economic and social impacts are expected to further reinforce Jammu and Kashmir’s status as one of India’s top tourist destinations.
