Palash Sen: “Young Musicians Don’t Want to Be Slaves”

In a music industry often dominated by major labels, Palash Sen, the lead singer of the renowned Indian band Euphoria, remains a steadfast supporter of independent music. At 58, Sen is pleased to witness the growth of independent music in India, firmly believing that music should be driven by passion and creativity, not just commercial interests.

Sen observes that independent music is improving and gaining more recognition. “Independent music has definitely become better. Everybody has started speaking about it. Young musicians don’t want to be slaves to the system,” he says. However, many young artists still hesitate to voice their concerns due to fear of repercussions. “People are scared. Somebody in control can turn around and say, ‘you’re talking too much; I won’t give you work’,” he explains, highlighting the industry’s power dynamics.

Sen contrasts the Indian music industry with the American one, noting that in the U.S., the music and film industries operate separately, providing musicians with more freedom. “In America, the film industry and the music industry are separate. If the film industry wants your music, it will buy it from you. It will not hire you like a slave to just create music for them,” he points out.

Sen is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of musicians. He plans to revive two of Euphoria’s most beloved albums, Dhoom and Maeri, by collaborating with numerous new artists. “There are going to be several young artistes who will be appearing. We are already getting multiple musicians to be part of Euphoria’s legacy. I have never sold out to the film industry,” he asserts. By involving young talents, Sen hopes to inspire them and continue Euphoria’s legacy.

Even if only a small number of young musicians appreciate and understand Euphoria’s impact, Sen feels his mission will be accomplished. “Even if one percent of these youngsters understand what I or Euphoria have done, I think my job will be done. That is the best thing I can do,” he says.

Palash Sen’s unwavering dedication to independent music and his support for young artists make him a role model. His journey with Euphoria and his refusal to succumb to commercial pressures highlight the importance of staying true to one’s art. In a world where commercial interests often prevail, Sen’s message is clear: music should be about passion, expression, and authenticity.
