Singapore Elections: Pritam Singh Re-elected as Workers’ Party Secretary-General Ahead

Pritam Singh, the Indian-origin Leader of the Opposition in Singapore, has been re-elected as the secretary-general of the Workers’ Party (WP). This development comes as the city-state gears up for its next general election, which must be called by November 2025 but could occur as soon as November this year.
Singh, 48, who has held the position of WP secretary-general since 2018, was elected unopposed on Sunday. “Fantastic result. We’re looking forward to working with this CEC for the next two years,” Singh remarked to reporters, as quoted by Channel News Asia. He emphasized that the election was an internal party matter and refrained from discussing future candidatures.
The WP also re-elected Sylvia Lim as chairwoman. Lim, along with 13 other members, will form the Central Executive Committee (CEC), the party’s highest decision-making body. The CEC, elected for a two-year term, will play a crucial role in preparing the WP for the upcoming general election.
In addition to his re-election, Singh is currently facing legal challenges. He was charged in court on March 19 for allegedly lying in Parliament about a case involving former WP member Raeesah Khan. Khan had claimed in 2021 that the police mishandled a sexual assault case, a statement she later admitted was untrue. Singh has pleaded not guilty and is scheduled to go on trial in October and November, according to media reports.
Despite these legal issues, Singh’s leadership within the WP remains strong. His re-election signals continued support from party members as they navigate both internal and external challenges ahead of the next general election.
The Workers’ Party, under Singh’s leadership, aims to solidify its position and prepare for a competitive election cycle. The next few months will be critical for the WP as they strategize and mobilize support in anticipation of the upcoming polls.
