Nikhil Kamath, co-founder of Zerodha, recently engaged in a podcast titled ‘People By WTF’ featuring Bill Gates, where they discussed a range of topics including philanthropy, capitalism versus socialism, and Gates’ relationship with India.
During the podcast, Bill Gates emphasized the role of philanthropy in addressing issues where governments and markets may fall short in innovation or intervention. He clarified, “We are not trying to take over government functions and we cannot possibly do that.”
When asked by Kamath about his views on capitalism versus socialism, Gates highlighted capitalism’s role in fostering freedom and innovation. “Capitalism gives you the freedom to start a new business or try out a new product, which is an idea of freedom not based on your background or class,” Gates explained, emphasizing its power in discovery.
Discussing ‘The Giving Pledge’, co-founded by Gates and Warren Buffet, Kamath inquired about Gates’ relationship with India. Gates spoke warmly about his long-standing association with the country, dating back to Microsoft’s early days. “We hired very smart IT graduates from India who later went on to establish development centers for us in four locations,” Gates recalled.
Gates also praised Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, highlighting his leadership and the significant contributions of Indian talent within the company. “A lot of amazing people I work with are from India, including Satya who is doing an amazing job as the CEO,” Gates remarked.
Reflecting on Microsoft’s investment in India, Gates mentioned, “India is a country where we spent the most money, close to one billion dollars a year.”
Nikhil Kamath, who has committed to donating half of his wealth through ‘The Giving Pledge’, shares a philanthropic bond with Gates, underscoring their mutual commitment to giving back to society.
