Rouse Avenue Court in Delhi rejected an interim bail request made by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who sought a seven-day release for medical reasons. Kejriwal is currently detained in Tihar Jail in connection with a money-laundering case related to the now-revoked Delhi excise policy.
The court even extended the judicial custody of Arvind Kejriwal, who appeared before the court via virtual means, until June 19.
The court has instructed the relevant authorities to perform the necessary medical examinations on the Aam Aadmi Party leader. The court is set to review Arvind Kejriwal’s application for default bail on June 7.
Kejriwal, who was arrested in March, was granted a temporary, three-week bail to participate in the Lok Sabha elections 2024, which ended on June 1. He returned to pre-trial detention the following day.
On Sunday, the Rouse Avenue Court sent Arvind Kejriwal to judicial custody until June 5. Duty Judge Sanjeev Aggarwal noted that Kejriwal surrendered to Tihar Jail following Supreme Court directions.
The court heard an Enforcement Directorate application for his judicial custody, pending as Kejriwal was on interim bail. The court also considered the ED’s application to extend custody by 14 days, filed on May 20 during Kejriwal’s interim bail.
On June 1, the court reserved its decision on Arvind Kejriwal’s fresh interim bail plea seeking seven days of bail. On April 9, the Delhi High Court dismissed Kejriwal’s plea for release from jail, rejecting his political vendetta claim amid the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
On June 4, the Supreme Court refused to entertain AAP leader Manish Sisodia’s bail pleas in the CBI and ED cases related to the alleged Delhi liquor policy scam. However, the apex court said Sisodia could revive his bail petitions after the ED and CBI file their final prosecution complaint and charge sheet, respectively.
A prosecution complaint is the ED’s equivalent of a charge sheet.
