The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) received recognition from the United Nations Climate Change Innovation Workshop for its effective adoption of sustainable water practices and efficient management techniques. Dr. V Ram Prasath Manohar, the Chairman of BWSSB, participated in the UN Climate Change 5th Systemic Innovation Workshop, where he outlined the board’s strategies for addressing water shortages and managing water supply challenges in Bangalore.
With Bangalore spanning approximately 800 square kilometers and hosting around 14 million residents, BWSSB faces the crucial task of supplying potable water and managing sewage systems. Around 60 percent of the city’s water supply relies on the Cauvery River, while the remaining 40 percent is sourced from groundwater. However, the failure of monsoons has led to a significant depletion of groundwater, resulting in more than 50 percent of bore wells failing. Consequently, there has been a sudden and substantial increase in dependency on Cauvery water.
Despite these challenges, BWSSB effectively managed the crisis through the adoption of innovative technologies and sustainable practices. Measures such as the enforcement of judicious water usage, installation of aerators to curb water wastage, and the utilization of modern technology for bore well management have been instrumental in addressing the water crisis.
Dr. Manohar expressed pride in the board’s ability to effectively meet the challenge and emphasized the need for ongoing preparation to tackle future challenges. He encouraged innovators to study Bangalore’s water management as a model and develop further sustainable innovations.
During the workshop, officers from various regions of the country showcased innovative initiatives undertaken in their respective cities. In the interactive session, participants commended Dr. Manohar and BWSSB for their efforts in mitigating the water shortage crisis.
