World Obesity Day 2024: How to prevent childhood obesity

Due to sedentary lifestyles and poor eating habits, an increasing number of youngsters worldwide are growing obese and are at risk of developing lifestyle diseases. According to a recent survey, since 1990, the global rate of obesity in adults has doubled and in children it has quadrupled, according to the medical journal The Lancet.

One billion individuals, or one in eight of the world’s population, have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more and are obese. Some of the things that appear to be accelerating childhood obesity are children who are addicted to their devices and who consume more junk food. Childhood obesity is primarily caused by an inactive lifestyle, poor eating habits, and a decrease in outdoor activities.

To prevent childhood obesity, the following things should be followed:

A balanced diet is important for kids, even though they like junk food and sweets. Parents should also make sure that kids eat a lot of nutrient-rich foods and limit their intake of processed foods. Consuming complete grains, lean meats, fresh produce, and fresh fruits and vegetables can nourish the body well and lower the risk of obesity and lifestyle-related disorders.

Say no to processed foods: Parents should eat healthily themselves in order to discourage their children from consuming unhealthy meals. Children should also be taught healthy habits from a young age. Reduce your consumption of processed snacks, sugar-filled sodas, sweets, and fast meals.

Enroll kids in sports: Prioritizing physical activities for children in schools and communities can help prevent sedentary behaviors. To help your child get more fit, try to encourage them to enjoy outdoor games and sign them up for sports like cricket and football.

Cut down on screen time by getting your kids involved in additional activities. Limiting their screen time is crucial.

Make sure your youngster gets enough sleep: Hormonal imbalances brought on by sleep loss might result in an increase in appetite. As a result, parents need to make sure their kids get enough sleep every day.
