The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the poll for 56 Rajya Sabha seats in 15 states on Monday. The poll is scheduled to be held on February 27 this year. The terms of the 56 incumbent Rajya Sabha MPs in 15 states are coming to an on April 2 and April 3.
According to the ECI notification, notification will be issued on February 8 for the poll, while February 15 will be the last date for filing nominations which will be scrutinised on February 16. The last date for withdrawing candidatures has been fixed as February 20.
The states where the Upper House polls will be held are Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Odisha, and Rajasthan.
However, Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of 10 MPs retiring, followed by Bihar and Maharashtra with six members each and five members each from West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh.
A source from ECI has said that the Election Commission will soon announce the dates of the upcoming Lok Sabha election in 2024, which is slated to be held in a few months.
