ONE CAPITAL, ONE STATE MOVEMENT ENTERING A YEAR, WEEK-LONG PROTESTS PLANNED IN ANDHRA PRADESH

HYDERABAD: On 17 December 2019, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy announced the three capitals for the state on par with the South African model. Since then, there have been multiple protests at the village level against the decentralisation of the capital plan. The protest is going to complete one year this month.

On the occasion of it, the Amaravati Parirakshana Samithi Joint Action Committee (JAC) conducted a round table meeting in Vijayawada in which leaders from the opposition parties, including TDP, Congress and other political parties participated and expressed their support for the Amaravati protests. They have decided to hold week-long protests in the name of one state, one capital. They want one capital and that must be Amaravathi.

The Opposition leaders are planning to pressurise the government through their protests to cancel the decision of three capitals for the state of Andhra Pradesh. But YS Jagan Mohan Reddy’s government is in no mood to listen to their demand. It wants to make Visakhapatnam as executive capital, Kurnool as judicial capital in addition to Amaravathi as legislative capital.

Gadde Seshagiri Rao, Secretary of the Amaravati Parirakshana Samithi Joint Action Committee, said that they would follow the pattern of the protesting farmers from Punjab who laid siege to Delhi and have been protesting at the border. But the Government of AP is not making any efforts to start even a dialogue.
