The Central government has taken proactive measures in response to the aftermath of severe cyclonic storm Michaung, directing advanced relief funds to Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, two states significantly affected by the calamity.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced via ‘X’ that in light of the extensive damage caused by the cyclone in these states, Prime Minister Narendra Modi directed the Ministry of Home Affairs to release the second installment of the State Disaster Relief Fund (SDRF) in advance. An amount of Rs 493.60 crore has been allocated to Andhra Pradesh and Rs 450 crore to Tamil Nadu to assist in managing the relief efforts necessitated by the cyclonic impact.

Shah emphasized that the central government had previously released the first installment of the same amount to both states. Expressing solidarity with the affected populace, he assured continuous support and urged swift normalization of the situation.
Michaung made landfall on the Andhra Pradesh coast near Bapatla, causing extensive devastation, affecting over two crore people, and claiming several lives. The cyclone caused widespread damage to crops, primarily paddy fields, and prompted the evacuation of approximately 10,000 individuals in Andhra Pradesh.

In Tamil Nadu, continuous rainfall left the state capital, Chennai, submerged, compelling over 61,000 individuals to seek shelter in government facilities. With water, essential supplies, and electricity shortages, many sought refuge in service apartments and budget hotels. Civil and military rescue teams, including army helicopters delivering food aid, evacuated residents, emphasizing the inclusivity of the relief efforts and catering to women, senior citizens, and pets.
The central government’s prompt action aims to alleviate the immediate challenges faced by these states and ensure a speedy recovery from the cyclonic aftermath.
