In a heart-wrenching incident, five individuals, including four tourists, lost their lives when the cab they were travelling in met with a tragic accident at Zojila Pass on the Srinagar-Leh highway on Tuesday afternoon.
According to an official statement to The Daily Guardian, the unfortunate incident involved an SUV carrying at least seven tourists, which veered off the road and plunged into a gorge at Yadav Morh near Zojila Pass.
A swift rescue operation was immediately launched, and it was reported that at least four tourists, believed to be from Kerala, succumbed to injuries sustained in the mishap.
The official further informed that two other individuals, including the driver of the ill-fated vehicle, sustained serious injuries and were rushed to PHC Sonamarg. From there, they were referred to SKIMS Soura for specialized treatment. Unfortunately, the driver couldn’t survive despite efforts at the tertiary care facility.
Additionally, two more occupants of the vehicle suffered minor injuries in the accident.
The tragic incident has cast a pall of sorrow over the region, and authorities are extending support to the affected families. The local administration is also conducting a thorough investigation to ascertain the cause of the accident.
