No permission for BJP’s Vel Yatra, Tamil Nadu govt informs Madras HC

The Tamil Nadu government on Thursday informed the Madras High Court that the permission for the rally cannot be granted for the BJP’s proposed “Vel Yatra” in view of the possibility of the second and third wave of Covid-19.

A petition, which was moved on Wednesday seeking a ban on the BJP’s “Vel Yatra”, was taken up for hearing. Appearing for the government, AG Vijaya Narayanan argued that the police have already informed BJP to approach the district collectors or the SPs to seek permission for the Yatra across the districts.

He said that due to Covid-19, the state government has announced in its recent Unlock guidelines that from October 16th, permission for any political or religious gathering will be allowed with people not more than 100.

Hearing the arguments, the Madras high court has disposed of the petition and has asked the BJP to approach the appropriate court for legal remedy.

As soon as the government informed the court that it would not permit the “Vel Yatra”, the BJP state president held meetings with important leaders and the national general secretary.

Commenting on the developments, Tamil Nadu minister Jayakumar said the BJP should drop its idea of ‘Vel Yatra’ in view of the wellbeing of the people.
