Speaker’s notice puts Maharashtra CM’s position under siege

The political landscape of Maharashtra might be on the brink of transformation, as the recent actions of the Maharashtra Assembly’s Speaker, Rahul Narvekar, bring about questions concerning the stability of the current government. Narvekar issued notices to 54 MLAs, including Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Shiv Sena leader Aditya Thackrey, seeking clarification on a long-pending disqualification petition.
This move, following the receipt of the Shiv Sena’s Constitution from the Election Commission of India, marked the commencement of disqualification hearings against 16 Shiv Sena MLAs, including CM Shinde. Surprisingly, the sole exception to the notification list is Rutuja Latke from the Shiv Sena Uddhav faction, who was elected in a by-election following a party split last year. The MLAs have been given a week to respond, escalating the tension within the legislative assembly. This action might potentially change the political dynamics in Maharashtra.
Aditya Thackrey has been vocal about his belief that Shinde’s tenure as Chief Minister is nearing its end. He has claimed that over 20 MLAs from Shinde’s camp are considering a return to the parent Shiv Sena faction, provided they are permitted to do so unconditionally and with apologies.
In the midst of this political uncertainty, the Uddhav Thackrey faction has appealed to the Supreme Court. They have requested the court’s directive for Speaker Narvekar to expedite the disqualification process. It has been over two months since the speaker has taken any action on this front, which has necessitated the appeal to the highest court. The Supreme Court has previously clarified its stance on the issue. Simultaneously, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar hinted at an impending cabinet expansion prior to the Monsoon Session of the Maharashtra Assembly. Observers speculate that the potential exit of CM Shinde might pave the way for Pawar, who has publicly expressed his aspiration to become the Chief Minister.
The Speaker’s verdict on this issue will carry immense weight, as it could potentially redefine the political scene in Maharashtra. As we await the outcome of these political manoeuvres, one thing is clear: the stability of CM Shinde’s position is under serious scrutiny.
