The manufacturer, Apple Inc., announced on Wednesday that India’s recently-launched 5G services will be enabled in iPhones in December. This will be achieved via a software upgrade in models of the company’s flagship product, it said.

“We are working with our carrier partners in India to bring the best iPhone experience to users as soon as network validation and testing for quality and performance is completed,” the electronics giant said in a statement.

“5G will be enabled via a software update and will start rolling out in December,” the statement further said, adding that the services will be provided for iPhones 12, 13, 14, and SE.

Apple Inc., based in Cupertino, California, made the announcement on the same day that senior officials from the Union government were due to meet with representatives of domestic telecom companies Bharti Airtel, Reliance, and Vodafone Idea, as well as international manufacturers Apple, Samsung, Vivo, and Xiaomi to discuss the early adoption of 5G.

What brought about the meeting?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced the new technology to the nation on October 1. Bharti Airtel then expanded its network to eight cities, while Reliance started beta testing its services in four cities. The two carriers said that they would enlarge their respective networks in 2019.

However, a number of iPhone models, including the recently released 14 and several of Samsung’s top models, lack the software necessary to support 5G. The meeting was scheduled as a result of this by “concerned” top bureaucrats from the telecom and IT ministries.

After China, India is the largest mobile market in the world.
