India’s coronavirus cases rose to 28,369,25 with a record single-day spike of 69,652 infections. The recoveries increased to 20,96,664, taking the recovery rate to 73.91%, while the death toll climbed to 53,866 with 977 new fatalities. Interestingly, eight states now lead India’s Covid-19 tally with over 1 lakh cases each.
India, which has the third-highest number of coronavirus cases in the world, has eight states, which have recorded over one lakh cases each, accounting for 77.87% of its total tally. These states are Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, West Bengal and Bihar.
India’s worst affected state Maharashtra reported 14,492 new cases pushing its tally of confirmed Covid-19 cases to 6,43,289. This includes 1,62,491 active cases. A total of 21,359 patients have succumbed to the infection in the state, 326 in the last 24 hours.
Tamil Nadu recorded as many as 5,986 Covid-19 cases in the last twenty-four hours taking the state’s tally to 361,435. The fresh infections have pushed the number of active Covid-19 cases in the state to 53,283, while 301,913 people have recovered from the disease so far. The state recorded 116 new fatalities, pushing the overall toll to 6,239.
The national capital recorded 1,215 fresh coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, taking the tally to 1.57 lakh, while the death toll from the disease mounted to 4,257. Twenty-two fatalities have been recorded in the last 24 hours. The death toll due to the disease has mounted to 4,257.
West Bengal reported 3,197 new Covid-19 cases and 53 deaths in the last twenty-four hours. Total number of COVID cases stands at 1,29,119 in the state, including 27,696 active cases, 98,789 discharged cases and 2,634 deaths so far.
Uttar Pradesh registered a record 95 deaths due to Covid-19 in the last twenty-four hours, taking the total fatalities in the state to 2,733. With 4,991 fresh Covid-19 cases, the state’s tally climbed to 1,72,334 The state presently has 48,511 active coronavirus cases while the number of those recovering and getting discharged from hospitals reached 1,21,090.
Kerala recorded 1,968 fresh Covid-19 cases and nine related deaths, taking the infection count in the state to 52,199 so far. As many as 1,737 were infected through contact and the source of infection of 100 people was not yet known.
The Covid-19 death toll in Haryana reached 578 as eleven more people succumbed to the disease, while 996 fresh cases pushed the infection tally to 50,926. Meanwhile, Punjab CM Capt. Amarinder Singh extended weekend lockdown and daily night curfew from 7 pm to 5 am across the state.
