Officials reported that a heavy storm in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district resulted in the deaths of at least four individuals and left over 100 others injured on Sunday. Gusty winds caused trees to fall and houses to sustain damage in various parts of the district and surrounding areas.
SP Khandbahale Umesh Ganpat informed the media that the storm, accompanied by hail, uprooted trees and caused property damage in Jalpaiguri. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee stated that civil administration, police, and disaster management personnel were mobilized for relief efforts. Quick response teams were deployed, and affected individuals were relocated to safer locations.
Expressing sadness over the incident, Banerjee assured victims of necessary assistance from the district administration, including compensation for the families of those who lost their lives and those who sustained injuries. West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose established an emergency cell in Raj Bhavan to address the storm’s impact in Jalpaiguri and requested additional support from national disaster management authorities.
Jalpaiguri Government Medical College Superintendent Kalyan Khan reported that 49 patients were admitted to the hospital, with over 170 others treated in the emergency department. Local residents described the storm as “very strong,” causing widespread damage to homes and resulting in numerous casualties.
