Quinn suffers from a chronic condition called Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS), which causes her immune system to respond to common substances as severe allergens. To protect herself, she has developed strict guidelines for her potential partners before they can lock lips with her.
Mast Cell Activation Syndrome is a rare disorder where mast cells in the body malfunction, releasing chemicals in response to harmless substances, leading to life-threatening allergic reactions. According to the Cleveland Clinic, an episode of MCAS can cause symptoms such as hives, diarrhea, vomiting, and shortness of breath. In extreme cases, it can lead to anaphylaxis, a potentially fatal condition.
Quinn was diagnosed with MCAS in 2017 after experiencing a series of severe allergic reactions, which began after a nut-related incident. “I got sick with MCAS in September of 2017 after one true allergic reaction to cross-contamination with nuts spiraled into a series of anaphylactic episodes to foods I wasn’t allergic to,” she explained.
In a viral TikTok video, Quinn shared three strict rules her potential partners must follow to kiss her safely. These rules help her manage her condition while allowing her to maintain a relatively normal social life:
These precautions are essential for Quinn to avoid potentially fatal allergic reactions, but they also serve as a litmus test for her to determine if someone is serious about her. “If they have to follow a few rules to kiss you, then they obviously care, they’re obviously interested, and they’re willing to put in a good amount of effort,” Quinn stated.
Despite the dangers, Quinn chooses not to isolate herself completely. “Kissing boys is definitely a risk,” she acknowledged in a video. “It invites potential instability into my life. But so does everyday life for me.” She explained that while she could avoid kissing altogether, she prefers to take calculated risks to live a full and happy life.
